Hemispherical bowl-shaped compression mold produces curved, dome-shaped FRP or composite parts such as satellite dishes, dome skylights, covers, and hemispherical housings. The die cavity is a smooth concave hemisphere machined into a round steel plate.

Die Geometry

The cavity is a precise concave hemispherical bowl, polished to a smooth finish. The upper punch is the matching convex hemisphere. When closed, the gap between the two halves defines the wall thickness of the finished dome. Flash grooves around the perimeter trim excess material.

Material and Process

SMC or glassfiber mat with resin is placed in the lower cavity. The press closes slowly, allowing the material to flow evenly up the curved surface. Cure time depends on wall thickness and resin system. After demolding, the flash is trimmed and the edge is sanded smooth.
