FRP Vessel Design Pressure Rating Guide

FRP vertical and horizontal vessels are designed for vacuum, positive pressure, or atmospheric duty depending on the process. Specifying the correct pressure rating is essential: an over-rated vessel adds cost, while an under-rated vessel risks buckling or rupture. This guide explains how pressure rating is derived and how to communicate it in an inquiry.
Pressure Categories
Atmospheric vessels: open or vented to atmosphere; designed mainly for hoop stress from liquid head and for wind and seismic loads.
Positive-pressure vessels: closed tanks with a fixed working pressure; the wall thickness is calculated from the hoop stress formula pD / (2t E).
Vacuum vessels: subject to external pressure; require stiffening rings or a thicker wall to avoid buckling under full vacuum or partial vacuum.
Fully enclosed and heated vessels: include temperature derating because resin strength drops as temperature rises.
Derating Factors
Most polyester and vinyl ester resins lose 20 to 40 percent of their room-temperature strength at 80 °C. The designer applies a derating factor so that the laminate remains within allowable stress even at the maximum operating temperature. Always state both the design pressure and the design temperature together.
Stiffening Rings and Nozzles
For large-diameter tanks under vacuum, external or internal stiffening rings prevent ovalization. Nozzles and manways are reinforced locally because they create openings in the wall; load cases include nozzle reactions from connected piping and thermal expansion.
Documentation
Request a calculation sheet showing design pressure, design temperature, specific gravity, corrosion allowance, ultrasonic test points, and the standard followed. Third-party inspection (such as SGS or BV) can be arranged for export projects.
Conclusion
Pressure rating is not a single number; it must be paired with temperature, specific gravity, and external load conditions. A complete inquiry saves time and avoids re-design.
